Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three year-old thoroughbred horses, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race is one and a quarter miles (2 km) at Churchill Downs. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57.2 kg) and fillies 121 pounds (54.9 kg).[1] The race is known in the United States as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" for its approximate duration, and is also called "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is the first leg of the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing and is followed by the Preakness Stakes then the Belmont Stakes.

Swine Flu Symptoms

Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with swine flu have occurred. Most commonly, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (e.g. children near pigs at a fair or workers in the swine industry). In addition, there have been documented cases of one person spreading swine flu to others. For example, an outbreak of apparent swine flu infection in pigs in Wisconsin in 1988 resulted in multiple human infections, and, although no community outbreak resulted, there was antibody evidence of virus transmission from the patient to health care workers who had close contact with the patient.

What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Al Franken

Democrat Al Franken isn't waiting for the courts to decide who won Minnesota's Senate election to build his staff. Today, he picked Drew Littman, a veteran campaign consultant, to serve as his chief of staff in Washington. It is his second hire, as he works to position himself as the senator-in-waiting.

"With Drew leading our team, I know that my office will be able to uphold the Minnesota tradition of excellent and responsive constituent service," Franken said in a statement.

Littman, who has served as the head of Franken's transition team, is a former aide to Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.

"I know that Al Franken is ready to serve and that he will work hard on behalf of Minnesota's working families," Littman said in the news release. "And I can't wait to help him get started."

As it now stands, Minnesotans will have to wait until June, at the earliest, to learn who has won the six-month-old election battle. Franken, a former comedian, leads Republican incumbent Norm Coleman by 312 votes. Coleman has challenged the results to the state's Supreme Court, which has scheduled a hearing for June 1.

Speidi's wedding album

The wedding of the year (seriously) has taken place...
Spencer Pratt has finally made an honest woman of Heidi Montag - taking her up the aisle in California on Saturday 25th April.
It's hardly surprising that Speidi are applauding themselves
Barf.
Double barf.
That's right Mr Cameraman, get further away from the action. All this is making us queasy.
The Pratts seem to think this is some sort of royal wedding, as they overegg their stint at the top of the church's steps.
"How can I stay up here a bit longer?" Ponders Heidi.

Antioxidants

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. As a result, antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols or polyphenols.

Child Obesity

Childhood obesity is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child's health or wellbeing. As methods to determine body fat directly are difficult, the diagnosis of obesity is often based on BMI. Due to the rising prevalence of obesity in children and its many adverse health effects it is being recognized as a serious public health concern. The term overweight rather than obese is often used in children as it is less stigmatizing.

Between 5-25 percent of children and teenagers in the United States are obese.

swine flu virus

Swine influenza (also swine flu) refers to influenza caused by any virus of the family Orthomyxoviridae, that is endemic to pig (swine) populations. Strains endemic in swine are called swine influenza virus (SIV), and all known strains of SIV are classified as Influenzavirus A (common) or Influenzavirus C (rare).Influenzavirus B has not been reported in swine. All three clades, Influenzavirus A, B, and C, are endemic in humans.

People who work with poultry and swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of infection from these animals if the animals carry a strain that is also able to infect humans. SIV can mutate into a form that allows it to pass from human to human. The strain responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak is believed to have undergone this mutation.
